Baking Up Future Leaders: A Sweet Challenge for FFSC Youth!

“This exercise was intentionally designed to reinforce the importance of being selective with one’s peer group—a lesson that translates into everyday life and long-term success.” Shan Oliver, FFSC Youth Case Manager

Who knew whipping up a batch of cookies could be a masterclass in leadership?

That’s exactly what happened when teens from FFSC’s Youth Leadership and Development Program (YLDP) traded their notebooks for mixing bowls in a delicious, high-stakes Bake-Off!

“As part of our ongoing programming focused on leadership, teamwork, and decision-making, our teens participated in a Bake-Off group activity alongside their mentors,” explains FFSC Youth Case Manager, Shan Oliver. “This engaging and hands-on experience provided a unique opportunity for youth to apply interpersonal and collaborative skills in a fun, real-world setting.”

Youth were tasked with selecting their own group members, encouraging them to think critically about how they collaborate and who they choose to surround themselves with. “This exercise was intentionally designed to reinforce the importance of being selective with one’s peer group—a lesson that translates into everyday life and long-term success,” explains Oliver.

Participants had to plan, delegate tasks, and execute a recipe together, requiring effective communication, patience, and shared responsibility. Mentors observed and offered guidance throughout the challenge, helping youth reflect on group dynamics and personal choices.

Key Lessons:
The power of choice in relationships: Who you choose to surround yourself with can impact your ability to succeed.
Teamwork and leadership: Taking initiative and contributing to a team builds confidence and accountability.
Positive peer influence: Selecting peers who encourage, support, and challenge you can set the foundation for long-term personal growth.
