Youth Build Brighter Futures, One Birdhouse at a Time!
| Did you know? Since 2002, Fathers & Families Support Center (FFSC) has served at-risk youth in the community, providing much-needed structure to kids who do not come from traditional two-parent homes and need additional support. “Our Youth Leadership & Development Program (YLDP) isn’t just about learning; it’s about building a future,” Director of Youth Services Shan Oliver explains. Recently, YLDP participants took on a hands-on adventure, diving into the exciting worlds of construction and painting. Through a project of building and painting birdhouses, youth ages 14-24 discovered how a fun, small task can unlock massive opportunities. This was more than an activity; it was a powerful, real-world lesson in teamwork and craftsmanship. More Than a Skill, It’s a Launchpad “YLDP gives our youth a chance to not just learn a skill, but to build a foundation for a better future,” says Shan Oliver, YLDP Director of Youth Services. “The satisfaction they get from creating something with their own hands is the first step toward building a successful life they can be proud of.” Career Exploration: From Birdhouses to Buildings 🏡 The birdhouse project directly mirrored skills needed in the thriving construction and painting industries. These fields are always in demand because people will always need housing, renovations, and property maintenance. Construction & Home Building: Participants learned how to measure wood like a professional carpenter and worked together to assemble the pieces, showcasing the teamwork essential to any construction crew. This activity opened their eyes to diverse career paths, from general labor to specialized trades like plumbing and electrical work. Painting: Sanding and painting the birdhouses taught them the crucial finishing skills of a painter. This step highlighted the vital role painters play in making structures both beautiful and protected. The project also showed them how trades combine physical work with creative design. By using tools and materials, they not only experienced the joy of creating something from scratch but also gained a deeper appreciation for how these rewarding careers can provide stability and pride. |
