Jacob S.

Family Formation Alum

The world had dealt Jacob S. a tough hand, but he was determined to play a winning one. A father of four, with another child due this year, Jacob had faced the harsh realities of a past steeped in addiction and poor choices. His road to redemption began behind bars, where he desperately searched for a way to reclaim his life and, more importantly, his children. He was resolute in his desire to be a better dad, especially for the new life on the way.

A Desperate Search and a Beacon of Hope
Jacob, a veteran who had honorably served his country years before, found himself in a familiar cycle that led him to prison. His struggle with alcohol and substance abuse had cost him dearly, including the temporary loss of his one-year-old, who was taken into protective custody. While incarcerated, a flicker of hope ignited when he stumbled upon Fathers & Families Support Center (FFSC). He knew he couldn’t return to his old habits; he yearned to be the father he never had — a man of honor and integrity, and especially a strong, sober presence for his unborn child.

Rebuilding a Life, One Step at a Time
Upon his release, Jacob entered a transitional program, which led him to a recovery home where he could focus on sobriety. It was there that his connection with FFSC truly solidified. The sober house, recognizing FFSC’s reputation for helping fathers, allowed him to attend their classes. “Finding FFSC was a lifeline and my only hope to ever seeing my child again!” Jacob exclaimed, his voice thick with emotion. “There was no one else that could help me turn my life around and give hope to my family.”

The Transformative Power of Support
At FFSC, Jacob embarked on a journey of self-discovery and growth. He learned what it truly meant to be a responsible, involved father. “They taught me all about child support and my rights as a father,” he shared. “Staff supported my sobriety and efforts to become the man I always wanted to be.” This newfound knowledge was especially vital as he prepared for the arrival of his fifth child.
One of the most daunting challenges Jacob faced was navigating the legal system to regain visitation with his youngest child. FFSC stood by him every step of the way, even helping him represent himself in court. “I was so scared because I had never done anything like that before,” Jacob admitted, “but FFSC staff supported me the whole way.”
Beyond legal guidance, FFSC provided a safe space for Jacob to confront his past. He met with an on-site therapist to work through old traumas, a pivotal step in his healing. “FFSC opened my eyes that men need help too, and it’s okay to ask for help,” he reflected.

A Second Chance and a Brighter Future
The efforts paid off. Jacob was granted regular visitation with his child, a moment he describes as “such a blessing.” He now enjoys a second chance at being the father he always dreamed of being, not just for his existing children but also for the one on the way. “To have a second chance and to have FFSC as my support year round,” he added with gratitude.
Today, Jacob is employed full-time, and his life revolves around his children. When he’s not working, he cherishes every moment with them. “We love to go out for ice cream, horseback riding, and anything outdoors,” he beamed. “This weekend, I’m taking my family to the Renaissance Fair and we’re all dressing in costume.” Jacob’s story is a testament to the power of resilience, the importance of support, and the unwavering love of a father determined to build a better future for his family, including the newest addition due this year.
