Youth Leadership & Development

Our Youth Leadership & Development Program mentors, helps young men and women, most of whom don’t have an active father in their lives, to become responsible members of their communities.

The program teaches avoidance of high risk situations and behaviors such as gang involvement, drug/alcohol use and unhealthy relationships. Mentors prepare participants for higher education and training programs, careers and healthy decision making.

Participants benefit from group as well as one-on-one mentoring and through school and community-based learning experiences.

Graduates receive follow-up services for up to one year to support their transition to adulthood.

Youth Success Stories

Inesha Finds a Future at FSC

Through FSC’s Youth and Leadership Mentor Program, Inesha has landed a position working in packaging at Proctor & Gamble.

Inesha learned about FSC when it’s Youth team was out in the St. Louis community presenting information about their programs, said FSC Youth Case Manager Whitney Blockton.

Inesha Williams, 18, recent high school graduate, turned to FSC for help in finding employment. She wanted guidance and had a juvenile record.

“Fathers’ Support Center provides youth, like Inesha, with resume building, how to fill out a job applications and the leadership skills to stay employed,” said Blockton

“FSC helped me with finding a job by providing me a mentor. She prepared me for an interview and now I’ve passed the 60-day mark at my job! Thanks, FSC!” she said.

FSC Youth Director Aaron Harris added, “FSC Youth and Leadership & Development Program mentors assist participants in finding success for themselves and their families and their communities.”

Teen Finds Career With Help of Mentor

Caleb told his mentor, FSC Youth Director Aaron Harris, that he wanted to become an architect.

“After hearing how enthusiastic Caleb was learning more about architecture I contacted Grant Alexander of SP Architects and arranged for them to do lunch together,” said Harris

Grant gave Caleb advice on where he should further his education in architecture.

“I talked with Caleb about the difference between attending an accredited architecture university versus an unaccredited architecture university,” Grant said.

“His knowledge supported my interest in attending the University of Oklahoma which has an accredited architecture program,” said Caleb.

Caleb was also able to see first-hand some of the daily activities of an architect.

“We looked over blueprints of new projects that SP Architects were working on and he showed me the appropriate way to draw steps for a home through free hand drawing,” Caleb said.

Alexander gave the teen a few tools architects use: a scale, architecture pencil to draw steps with as well, and a lead sharpener.

Alexander was impressed with Caleb.

“I invited him to meet up again to discuss computer drafting techniques used by architects,” he added.
