Making the Turn: From Redirection to Leadership

Youth Leadership & Development Program (YLDP) Alum

At just 17 years old, Wendell S. felt like the world was closing in. Caught up with a rough crowd and facing the heavy reality of the juvenile justice system in April 2024, he stood at a terrifying crossroad. For far too many young men in his shoes, the story ends right there—overshadowed by fear, regret, and lost potential.

But Wendell refused to let his darkest chapter define the rest of his life. What he needed wasn’t judgment; he needed someone to stand in his corner and believe in his future when he struggled to see it himself.

That lifeline arrived through Fathers & Families Support Center’s (FFSC) Youth Leadership and Development Program (YLDP) —a sanctuary of structure, mentorship, and unwavering support for youth ages 14-24.

“Before FFSC, I honestly couldn’t see a positive path for myself,” Wendell reflects, his voice quiet but filled with emotion. “I was lost. But FFSC mentors didn’t give up on me. They held me accountable, but for the first time in a long time, someone looked at me and saw who I could become—not just the mistakes I had made.”

Small Steps, Monumental Milestones

When Wendell was released in September 2025, he didn’t look back. Armed with newfound purpose and the steady guidance of his mentors, he immediately poured his heart into building a life he could be proud of.

FFSC encouraged Wendell to finish his education, so he enrolled at the Metropolitan Education and Training (Met) Center, putting in early mornings and late nights studying to make up for lost time. In November 2025, tears of pride and relief replaced years of uncertainty: Wendell officially earned his high school diploma.

For Director of Youth Services, Shan Oliver, who walked alongside him through every hurdle, watching Wendell cross that finish line was unforgettable.

“Wendell’s transformation touches your heart because you can see how deeply he wanted a real second chance,” says Oliver. “He didn’t just pass through our program—he did the hard, courage-requiring work of changing his life from the inside out. To watch a young man step out of the shadows of his past and walk boldly into leadership—that is the heart of our mission.”

A Heart Bent on Lifting Others Up

Today, Wendell isn’t just surviving—he is thriving. He has secured stable, full-time employment, proving his dedication every single day, and has enrolled in culinary arts school to turn his passion into a lifelong profession.

Yet, perhaps the most moving part of Wendell’s journey isn’t just what he has achieved for himself—it’s what he is giving back. Regularly, Wendell stands on the front lines of FFSC’s community outreach, handing out fresh meals to individuals experiencing homelessness. The same young man who once needed a hand up is now extending his own to lift others.

“When I hand someone a meal on the street, I see myself in them,” Wendell shares. “I know what it feels like to feel lost or forgotten. Giving back is my way of showing that no matter where you start, positive change is always possible if someone gives you a chance.”

The Power Behind Every Miracle

Wendell’s resilience is a beautiful testament to what happens when love, accountability, and opportunity come together. Every high school diploma earned, every career path launched, and every life transformed through FFSC begins with a simple decision to care.

Your generosity provides the safety net, the mentorship, and the belief that allow young men like Wendell to rewrite their stories—turning redirection into lifelong leadership.
