With his mother incarcerated and his father absent, Dawane grew up leaning on his grandmother, carrying the heavy weight of instability on his young shoulders. It was during this difficult chapter that Dawane was introduced to FFSC’s Youth Development and Leadership Program. On the surface, he was guarded and resistant. But beneath that tough exterior was a young man desperate for guidance, consistency, and a real opportunity.

Our mentors immediately went to work, providing him with the life skills he had been denied for so long. However, the journey to healing is rarely a straight line. After his initial release, Dawane struggled to find his footing and tragically re-entered the justice system.

But at FFSC, we do not give up on our youth.

When we reconnected with Dawane during his second placement, something profound had shifted. He was ready to break the cycle. Together, we focused on the vital building blocks of a better life: accountability, goal setting, and the practical steps he would need to succeed upon release.

When Dawane finally walked out of the justice system, he immediately reached out to us—not out of obligation, but out of a fierce, genuine desire to transform his life. Because of the resources made possible by our supporters, we were there to answer his call. We helped him secure the foundational tools he needed, like his birth certificate and state ID. We connected him with strong, positive male mentors and introduced him to new, constructive experiences that entirely broadened his perspective on what his life could be.

Today, Dawane is not the troubled youth we first met. He is a proud high school graduate. He is steadily employed at Home Depot. Most importantly, he is a young man who is fully committed to building a brighter, self-sufficient future.
